History of massage therapy
The practice of massage has been in use for thousand of years. The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine, a Chinese text belonging to 2700 B.C. describes, "breathing exercises, massage of the skin and flesh, and exercises of the hands and feet" to cure paralysis and fever.
Hippocrates, the Greek physician in 400 B.C wrote about the use of rubbing as a remedy to cure sports and war injuries. Ancient records from Japan, Rome and Arab also refer to massage therapy.
Modern scientific technique based massage came into use with Per Henrik Ling, a Swedish based fencing master and gymnastics instructor who introduced a therapeutic system that involves both massage and exercise. Two physician brothers, George and Charles Taylor introduce massage therapy in the U.S. in the 1850s.
Categories of massage techniques
Traditional European massage- this type of massage includes the five soft-tissue manipulation techniques. The Swedish massage is also an example of the traditional European massage.
Contemporary western massage- this type of massage is based on the modern concept of anatomy and includes a number of massages like neuromuscular massage, sports massage and myotherapy.
Structural realignment and movement integration- these techniques involve the manipulation of soft tissues and include Hellerwork, Rolfing, Feldenkrais, and the Alexander technique.
Oriental massage methods- this technique is based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine and involves acupressure and Shiatsu.
Energy-based methods- in this technique, pressure is applied to the body to heal and include methods like polarity therapy, therapeutic touch, and Reiki.
Considerations to look before going for a massage
There are few things that you need to keep in mind before going for a massage therapy. The first and foremost point that should be checked is to find the right massage therapists. You should look for the right certified massage therapists who could cater to your needs.
It is better if you talk to your therapists about any problems regarding your body. Talk about the amount of pressure or movement speed you are comfortable in.
You can bring in your own lotions or oils if you are not comfortable with what they use. If you have any kind of skin problems or allergies, it is better you ask them to use your own lotions.
It is better to reschedule your massage appointment if you are suffering from heavy cold or migraine. Don't eat anything heavy for at least an hour and also drink plenty of water before and after the massage sessions.
